VISTA Wireless Networking Lag Spike Fix
Hey all...
Not sure how many of you are trying VISTA but I recently upgraded to VISTA when I got a new pc and the first thing I noticed was sporadic/periodic lag in many games (most noticeable in Guildwars due to the way it is coded). Basically every 45-60 seconds you will experience a brief, but noticeable, lag spike. Games I've tested and found to display this issue are: EVE PotBS Guild Wars Tabula Rasa BF2142 Probably tons of others have issues too. In EVE it's barely noticeable unless you're watching for it. In POTBS you'll notice it during AVCOMBAT most frequently. In TR it's very noticeable. Here's what is happening: In Windows XP you would rarely get this problem as, once you are connected most of the newer XP drivers would disable a feature called Wireless Zero Configuration Polling. Once you are connected to a network. In VISTA, however, it does not. Even after you are connected Vista will continue to poll for available networks every 45-60 seconds. In VISTA the WLAN and the WZC services were tied together. Thus when Vista polls the entire network service halts for a second or so. Not generally enough to kill your connection but definitely enough to cause a lag spike (most noticeable in many games as a rubber band or delayed action) How to fix it: Best way that I've found: 1) If you do not already have them locate and download the XP drivers for your Wireless Adapter 2) Download WLAN Optimizer 3) Uninstall the VISTA drivers for your adapter. 4) Delete the VISTA drivers from your computer (there will be an option to do so). Also make sure you delete the folder containing the VISTA drivers from the computer if you installed them from there originally. 5) Re-install the device using the XP drivers 6) Re-setup your connection as normal. 7) Run WLAN Optimizer The lag spikes should now be gone. This sounds a lot nastier than it really is but it's the only way I've been able to reliably get rid of the periodic lag spikes using Wireless networking with VISTA. Took me forever to find out about loading XP drivers instead of Vista ones. Finally found a post on a Vista x64 forum that discussed the issue. Problem is that if you have dedicated VISTA drivers the optimizers don't work because of the different settings that Vista drivers use. Sidenote: If you have Vista 64bit you want to make sure you get XP 64bit drivers. Not sure if the XP 32 bit drivers will work properly. Hopefully microsoft will fix this issue some day but until then this works.

The thing is im a complete noob when it comes to screwing around with drivers so my question is, how do I uninstall my VISTA wireless driver and install the XP driver? A step by step would help me alot! |
